TEXAS — As part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 27 girls from Camp Mystic, police have confirmed the discovery of a message scratched into the wall of an old, unused bathroom located in a neglected section of the campgrounds.

The message, written directly onto the worn tile wall, simply read:

“We were never meant to leave.”

The bathroom is located inside a building that had been boarded up and overgrown with brush. Officials stated that this part of the camp was not on any current maps and may have been closed off for decades.

“The writing appears aged, but still legible,” said a spokesperson for the investigation.
“We’re currently analyzing the material and the surrounding area for any useful evidence.”

What investigators found at the scene:

  • Scratch marks low on the stall wall, possibly made by fingernails

  • A small piece of faded fabric, believed to match old camp uniforms

  • The initials “L.A.M.” carved repeatedly into the wooden door of one stall

While the identity of the writer is unknown, some family members of the missing girls have come forward suggesting that “L.A.M.” may match the initials of one of the campers who disappeared.

Investigation Continues

The bathroom and surrounding area have been cordoned off as forensic teams collect DNA samples and review historical blueprints of the camp. Authorities suspect that some older camp structures may have been left undocumented, either intentionally or due to poor record-keeping.

Although it’s too early to say whether the message is directly related to the missing girls, detectives consider it a potential lead worth investigating further.

“We don’t want to jump to conclusions,” one investigator said,
“but the timing and location of this message make it significant.”
