CAMP MYSTIC, TEXAS — In a major development in the ongoing search for the 27 girls missing from Camp Mystic, dive teams announced just 30 minutes ago that they have recovered a small backpack belonging to one of the missing campers, along with an unidentified object that officials describe as “deeply unsettling.”
The discovery was made during an underwater search in a narrow, debris-filled section of the river, located approximately 300 meters downstream from the camp’s main activity area — a zone that had only recently become accessible after water levels began to drop.
The Backpack
The backpack, though waterlogged, was quickly identified by its distinctive patches and handwritten name tag. It belonged to a 9-year-old camper whose name has been withheld for privacy reasons. Inside, authorities reportedly found:
-
A children’s journal
-
A damp photo of two girls smiling
-
A friendship bracelet — still intact
“It was clearly hers,” said one diver.
“It hadn’t been there long. That much we know.”
The Other Object
What’s caused the greatest stir among search teams and investigators, however, is the second item recovered — an object described only as ‘handmade and disturbing.’
Though police have not officially released a photo or full description, one rescue worker shared (under anonymity) that it resembled a crude doll or effigy, tied together with string and small scraps of fabric — some matching camper uniforms.
“It’s not something you'd expect a child to make,” the source added.
“And it was placed… not lost. That’s what makes it harder to process.”
The object is now being examined by forensic teams.
Families Respond
Shortly after the announcement, families of the missing girls were privately briefed. One parent described the moment as “both a breakthrough and a heartbreak.”
“We’re grateful for any clue,” she said,
“but that object — it makes you wonder what really happened out there.”
Investigation Continues
Authorities have expanded the search zone and plan to deploy more divers and scent dogs in the area where the backpack was found. Investigators are also combing through older camp records to understand if the handmade object may link to past events or traditions associated with Camp Mystic.
“We’re treating this as a significant lead,” said lead investigator Maria Keene.
“Every detail matters now.”
As the search enters its third week, the latest discovery brings a renewed sense of urgency — and a chilling reminder that the answers may not be far from where it all began.
