After days of agonising uncertainty, police have confirmed the discovery of the body of Army Sergeant Alex Cairnie, who had been missing since early last week. His body was located in a remote woodland area near Tidworth, Wiltshire — the town where he had been stationed.

Sgt. Cairnie, 34, was reported missing after failing to return from a routine solo hike, prompting a massive search effort involving military personnel, police units, and local volunteers.

According to sources close to the investigation, when his body was found, he was clutching something tightly in his right hand — a small, weathered photograph believed to be of his wife and two young children. Authorities have not officially confirmed the contents, but one officer at the scene described the moment as “heartbreaking and deeply human.”

“He never let go.”

Military officials have praised Sgt. Cairnie’s distinguished service and unwavering character. “He served his country with honour, discipline, and quiet strength,” said Lieutenant Colonel James Radley. “Even in his final moments, he was thinking of those he loved most.”

The cause of death is currently under investigation, though foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

The community of Tidworth, home to one of the UK’s largest military bases, is reeling. Candlelight vigils are already being planned by residents and fellow servicemen. Hundreds have taken to social media to share tributes, calling Cairnie a “gentle soul,” a “loyal friend,” and “a father who adored his children.”

“It’s what he had in his hand that broke me,” one soldier wrote anonymously. “He wasn’t lost. He was trying to find his way back.”

The Ministry of Defence and Wiltshire Police are expected to release a joint statement later today.
