EPES, Alabama – A heartbreaking end to a multi-state search: 32-year-old Shardee McGill and her 3-year-old daughter, Janae, who had been missing from Jackson, Mississippi, have been found dead more than 130 miles from home.

Authorities say Shardee’s 2017 Chevrolet Equinox was discovered abandoned in Epes, Alabama, prompting a large-scale search of the area. On September 25, investigators located Shardee’s body in a shallow body of water near the Tombigbee River. The following day, little Janae was found not far from where her mother had been discovered.

Police have classified Shardee’s death as “suspicious,” but have not yet released the official causes of death for either victim. The investigation is ongoing.

Shardee’s husband, Johnathan McGill, traveled to Alabama and was questioned by law enforcement but later released. No arrests or named suspects have been announced at this time.

The shocking case has devastated the Jackson community and left many demanding answers about what led to the tragic deaths of the young mother and child.
