A large number of bags containing human remains have been discovered near the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco State, Mexico, where the 2026 FIFA North America Central America World Cup will be held, raising concerns about public safety.

According to local media, including Infobae, on the 8th, at least 456 bags containing corpses have been found at various locations near the Akron Stadium since 2022. The most recent discovery was in September.

The Akron Stadium is one of the venues where the North America Central America World Cup matches will be held starting in June next year. South Korea’s Hong Myung-bo team will also play two of their three group-stage matches there. South Korea has been placed in Group A alongside Mexico, South Africa, and the winner of the European playoff D.

The area where the remains were concentrated is the Las Aguas region, located approximately 20 km northwest of the Akron Stadium. Construction workers discovered 290 bags containing corpses in bulk while building a residential complex there.

The condition of the remains and the estimated time of death varied. While some corpses were intact, others were mutilated, including severed limbs, and there were also skeletal remains.

Local media reported that most of the corpses are presumed to be the work of local criminal organizations or cartels. Jalisco State has the highest number of missing persons in Mexico and is also the base of the notorious ‘Halisuko Sinsegae Cartel,’ known for its brutality. With 234 crimes per 100,000 people, it ranks among the top four states nationwide in terms of crime rate.

Search groups have criticized the Jalisco State government for not disclosing sufficient information about the clandestine burial sites discovered in the area. Servin Garcia, from a family search group of the missing, said, “Only after we dig the ground ourselves and find the bags containing corpses do the state prosecutors and forensic researchers come to collect them,” adding, “The authorities seem to believe that it is not in their interest for this issue to come to light.”

Garcia claimed that the authorities are intentionally downplaying the incident ahead of the World Cup. He said, “The authorities announce that they will soon wrap up the work, but that is a lie,” adding, “They are just rushing to make everything appear normal by the time the World Cup begins.”

Garcia also mentioned that wanted posters for the missing, which were attached around the Akron Stadium, have been removed, saying, “This is to prevent foreign visitors from knowing how serious the issue of missing persons is in this area.” He added, “So far, approximately 456 bags have been found, all near the Akron Stadium,” and stated, “Sadly, this is the stadium where the next World Cup matches will be held. It is truly tragic that the World Cup is being held in a place where such horrific incidents are occurring.”

Amid this situation, the state government is making every effort to maintain public safety ahead of the North America Central America World Cup. During the World Cup period, they plan to deploy between 15,000 and 20,000 security personnel and install an additional 3,000 security cameras, operating a total of over 10,000 cameras.
